I hope George packed his Aqua Net

By Vanessa, December 28, 2009 1:12 am

Vh-1 Classic is my new favorite cable channel.  They show music videos exclusively from the 70s, 80s and 90s.   And last week,  they aired non-stop Christmas videos!  I’d like to share my favorites with you.

Better late than never

By Vanessa, December 24, 2009 1:58 pm

When I was a kid, I would go to our family Christmas party with two priorities in mind:

Priority #1: Put black olives on my fingers:

Priority #2:  Make hilarious mashed potato sculptures. (Hey, at least I thought it was funny):

As a result, I  missed a lot of great foods, including Seven Layer Salad.   My grandma made it during the holidays, and everyone loved it.  Except me.   As a kid, I hated to eat foods that were touching on the plate, or mixed together.  Needless to say, Seven Layer Salad was a capitol offense.

Chestnuts roasting… in an electric oven

By Vanessa, December 19, 2009 12:09 pm

Regardless of our religion, we all know The Christmas Song, and its famous opening line:

“Chestnuts roasting on an open fire…”

But have you ever actually tried to roast chestnuts?  I haven’t.  In the spirit of Christmas, and trying new things, I decided that this would be my year to finally make roasted chestnuts.

Your guide to Advent Calendars!

By Vanessa, December 5, 2009 12:06 am

Confession:  I’ve been working ridiculously long hours lately.  And sadly, it has affected my ability to obsessively decorate our home for Christmas.  The garland and ornaments have sat, forlorn, in the back of our closet while I spend my evenings wading through a sea of flowcharts and spreadsheets.

I don’t want to say I’ve lost sleep over it… but only people of a certain disposition wake up in the middle of the night, thinking about Advent calendars.

The Slap Chop: Infomercial …or performance art?

By Vanessa, November 14, 2009 7:27 pm

Oh, Slap-Chop guy.  I wish you lived in my kitchen.

You guys are familiar with the Slap-Chop, right?  It started  innocently enough, as an infomercial for a vegetable chopper.  Then a Massachusetts DJ got ahold of it, and turned the whole thing into performance art.

I wish real  rap music was this entertaining:

This is so bad, it deserves to be studied.   Shall we?

What’s better than candy? Candy with candy on top!

By Vanessa, November 6, 2009 10:17 pm

To understand my love of Halloween candy, you must first understand what my parents used to give  to trick-or-treaters:

My mom used to work at a toothbrush company.  So one Halloween, she decided it would be a good idea to give out INDIVIDUALLY WRAPPED TOOTHBRUSHES.

But that was just one time, so I’ll let it slide.  My dad, however, is a repeat offender. Year after year, he gives out nickels.

sigh.

My first attempt at cupcakes since 2006!

By Vanessa, October 25, 2009 10:29 pm

Since I like to bake, you might assume that I like to bake cupcakes.  But I don’t.  My cupcake tin has sat, neglected, at the bottom of my oven storage drawer for the past 3 years.

The reason cupcakes are absent from my baking repertoire is the same reason you’ll never find leggings in my closet:  I don’t  like trends.  Cupcakes have become too trendy for their own good.   I think it’s incogitable that people will pay $22 for a dozen cupcakes, when the ingredients cost a grand total of $6  (Yes, Molly’s Cupcakes, I’m looking at you.  You too, Sweet Mandy B’s).

Apple Pie Wishes and Caviar Dreams!

By Vanessa, October 21, 2009 7:29 pm

Try to think of something - anything- that appeals to all of the following people:

- Senior Citizens

- Yuppie Parents

- Politicians

- Chefs

- Fans of Bluegrass music

Believe it or not, the answer is Apple Pie.  Who knew it could reach across so many social boundaries?  When I entered the Bucktown Apple Pie Contest, I figured it would be like a Star Wars Convention – heavily attended by a certain sub-culture, and overlooked by the rest of the world.  But I was wrong.  Over the course of my Sunday afternoon, I encountered every type of person listed above.
