The best cure for the winter blahs: Farmers Markets!

By Vanessa, March 13, 2010 9:37 pm

Every year around this time, I start to get cabin fever.  The novelty of winter wore off about 3 months ago, and it feels like spring may never come.   It’s this time of year when I am especially thankful for Farmers Markets!

This year, the Rogers Park Winter Farmers Market was held on the third floor of the United Church of Rogers Park.   While not as colorful as a summertime farmers market, it was a nice reminder that the worst days of winter are behind us.

I don’t know about you, but every time I visit a Farmer’s Market, I learn something new. For example:

Nuns like to bake:

Sunflower greens are good for you, and very easy to grow:

Apple cider is never out of season:

Late winter Farmers Markets are also a great time to learn about local CSA programs.  These two caught my eye:

Kings Hill Farm:  Located in Southwestern Wisconsin, with pickup locations in Chicago and Madison.

Earth First Farms:   located less than 100 miles from Chicago.   Although vegetables are offered, Earth First Farms specializes in apples.  They have over 4,000 apple trees, and even offer an Apple Tree Rental Program!

Here in the midwest,  CSA Programs are everywhere.  To find one near you, check out The Local Harvest website, and just enter your zipcode!

And now, in honor of vegetable farmers everywhere…  my favorite farm-related Jeopardy clip. (I posted this last year, but it deserves to be posted again):

Coming Soon:   Happy Birthday to the Daily V!
