Harlem Avenue has long been the mecca for the Italianesta and the wannabees. From as far south as 22nd St (Cermak Rd.) to the North side up to Higgins it's been the strip to find everything Italian. For over 45 years I've felt totally at home anywhere on Harlem Avenue. Back in the day of Bon Bons(a Happy Days style drive in restaurant), the Harlem Irving Drive-In Theater and the HIP (before it was an enclosed mall) The Hub Roller Rink. Maurice Lenell Cookie Bakery (you could watch the cookies being baked from the windows). Italians have flocked to Harlem Avennue to rub elbows with their own clan. Lets go get some Italian ice sometime this summer. The Mom

Also looking for the fresh polish sausage sold at Elliott's. Tried 6 different deli's in the area - ugh! We didn't like any of them!

This is for Donna, try the European Market on Lawrence & Austin, on the NE corner. There is parking in the back and you can enter there or walk around to the Lawrence entrance. They have a great deli & butcher. They also have prepared Polish dishes which are not only yummy, but very reasonably priced. Hope you try it and like it!

I LOVED their fresh polish sausage. We always had it at Easter dinner but could not today! Any idea if it will be sold elsewhere? I am not sure if they got it from somewhere else or made it there. Let me know if anyone has a clue on this!

Lunch Meatless in Seattle!
Yes the news has reached the foothills outside of Seattle. My heart grieves with all of you in and around Harwood Heights. When my brother in Chicago e-mailed about Elliott's, I felt as if a relative died. I grew up in HH and still visited Elliot's just to walk in the door and smell the aroma of freshly cooked broasted chicken, corn beef, crusty rye bread and an assortment of affordable lunch meats that anyone on the west coast can only dream about. When I traveled to relatives in California they asked for me to bring polish sausage and lunch meat from Elliott's. Yes it is an end of an era we will miss the pickle barrel that although you had no idea the last time it was cleaned out had the best pickles you have ever tasted!
We feel the pain.....
